We’ve heard a lot of talk about inclusion as far as media is concerned but still, many production companies have a ways to go when it comes to not only featuring marginalized groups but actually empowering them. A new film, premiering at the end of this summer, will be featuring a down syndrome actor as its protagonist.

The movie is called ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’ and the lead actor in the comedy is Zack Gottsagen who is Down Syndrome. Gottsagen will be in very good company — Shia LaBeouf and Dakota Johnson will be playing an outlaw who is on the run and a nursing home employee, respectively.

Gottsagen will be playing Zak, a man who runs away from his nursing home in order to pursue his dream of becoming a wrestler. On his quest to make his dreams come true, he’s joined by LaBeouf’s character and together they convince Zak’s nurse to leave the nursing home and join them on the road.

The movie is being considered a modern take on a Mark Twain adventure and should be a good time for the viewer. See a clip of the film, below.

The film will be in theaters August 9 after having had a successful screening during the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, earlier this year. Aside from how exciting it is that there is a Down Syndrome protagonist for what seems to be the first time ever, the executive producers of the movie will be the Special Olympics Chairman, Timothy Shriver, Best Buddies Founder, Anthony Shriver, and Co-founder and executive director of the Global Down Syndrome Foundation.

It’s great to see production companies finally getting the point and realizing the change has to come from within. Great job Hollywood!
